EDMLA’s Exclusive Showtek Interview

Interview by Melissa Kil

Dutch electronic act, Showtek, consisting of brothers Sjoerd and Wouter Janssen, have recently released a new single and music video “On Our Own” on Armada. This new direction for the dance music duo focuses on messages of love and inclusion. Having reached the top of multiple music charts with artists like David Guetta and Tiesto, Showtek follows their success with a video emphasizing the beauty and importance of individualism.  It’s a breath of fresh air to see so many DJs and producers encouraging more transparency, activism and acceptance through their music.

What are you currently working on?

A brand new EP with a big variety of productions. We feel it’s time to put out some different sounding Showtek in 2017.

Who would you most like to work with both in and outside of EDM?

I would love to do a song with Drake or The Weeknd. I believe Sjoerd still loves Kanye.

Where do you see the direction of your careers going?

Hopefully keep it going as it is. As long as we feel we are moving forward, meaning everyone in team Showtek are on the same page and working on great music, shows, and development of the group you won’t hear us complain. Success for us is being happy with what you do and what you achieve. That’s our main goal!

What event or show are you most looking forward to and what has been the best one so far this year?

There’s a festival called ‘Flying Dutch,’ hosted in three major cities (Amsterdam/Rotterdam/Eindhoven) all in one day transporting talent to every festival by helicopter. It’s become a national go-to festival and it’s great to be part of! We took some time off the last couple of months to work on music but Ultra Miami was definitely one of our highlights. Always amazing spirit at Miami Music Week.

Wouter – what are your favorite songs or styles of music to play on the piano?

I love Satie. His way of composing and the way his melodies make me feel are one of a kind.

Im getting more into different styles of playing, even more jazzy stuff it helps me fuse it into what we do in the studio and gives me new perspective on chord structures, etc.

Personally (outside of work and making music) what goals would you like to reach in your lives that you haven’t yet?

Inspire other people to follow their dreams. Staying closely connected to the person I am and aspire a great career without it having too much of an impact on my life besides music. I believe in family and friends and also my relationship with my girlfriend is super important to me.

So those are standards I will always stand for.

What do you like to do most in your free time when not on tour or when you have free time?

I love food, wine, beaches, working out, and comedy! These are all things that are easy to enjoy when you live in NYC or LA, so that’s why I love living in the US.

Could you tell us about your new release, “On Our Own” and the message you’re sending with that release and video?

We would love to inspire the next generation to follow their dreams and intuition. Life can be scary and hard when you don’t know who you are or where you belong, especially when you’re a teenager.

No one knows you better than yourself.  Your intuition will always guide you the right way. And be sure listen to people around you, or to your parents. Most parents have a strong idea what’s best for their children.

But we believe that every individual deserves a fair shot and someone to listen.
