So Much Space for Activities! A Dirtybird Campout Preview

It’s the morning of Saturday, October 8th. The trumpeter plays the “wake-up” song as the sun eagerly emerges in the Southern California sky. The flagpole rises, one tug at a time revealing a tie-dye pair boxer shorts with a raccoon tail attached to the crouch. Things got weird last night. I’m wondering how that squirrel got into my tent and why it’s covered in glitter. I hear some distinctly techy house off in the distance. My face hurts from smiling so much and my tummy tickles to do it again today!

This is about how I anticipate my review of Dirtybird Campout will sound.

The Dirtybird label has been providing an alternative for house and techno fans, creating great dance music with a sense of humor and all-around radness since 2005. Now in it’s second year, the campout brings together Dirtybird’s quirky characters, along with the Do Lab‘s propensity for masterfully taking outdoor music festivals to the next level. The summer camp themed festival will take place over 3 days at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado, CA on October 7th-10th.

The All-Star Camp Counselors (aka all of your favorite Dirtybird DJs) will include label father Claude Vonstroke, Green Velvet, comedian/musician Reggie Watts, Dirtybird regulars J.Phlip, Justin Martin, Catz ‘n Dogs, Shiba San, Justin Jay and many more.

There will also be stand-up comedy — more info here.

According to the 2016 Campout promo video, Claude says that his idea of a perfect event is one where:

“At 3am, I just want to find myself in a very weird place, doing something totally ridiculous.”

In addition to the awesome tunes and performances, the event touts that festival grounds will packed with activities and adventures. Just like sleep-away camp, attendees can expect contests, boat races, tournaments, field games and midnight hikes. There will be arts and crafts, such such as tie-dye, silkscreening and woodcarving workshops. There will be yoga, a talent show and my personal favorite, “animal encounters”. So many activities!

Are you looking forward to Dirtybird Campout as eagerly as me? I hope to see you there and play a round of cornhole and wild out to some dope tunes together!
